A severe thunderstorm roared through Branson, Missouri Thursday evening and moved over Table Rock Lake. The strong winds made for rough waters on the lake’s surface while a duck boat tour was underway, causing the tourist boat to overturn.

According to officials as of Friday morning, 17 people are confirmed dead as a result of the incident. 31 people were on the boat, some of which were children, at the time.

Forecasters at the nearby National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for this specific storm that led to this unfortunate event. Winds were estimated to have reached 60 mph with this storm. The lake had over 20-minute lead time from when the severe storm was declared and when it arrived.

President Donald Trump tweeted Friday, saying that his “deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those involved in the terrible boat accident…”
